20 killed in India-China Himalayan border clash
인도ㆍ중국 국경 지역인 히말라야에서 군부대 충돌로 20명 사망
Twenty Indian soldiers were killed during "hand-to-hand" fighting with Chinese troops in a disputed Himalayan border, India's military said. The clashes reportedly involved intense fighting and no gunfire.
인도군당국은 국경 분쟁지역인 히말라야에서 중국군과의 ‘난투극’으로 20명의 인도군이 사망했다고 밝혔다. 총격전은 없었으나 치열한 싸움이 일어난 것으로 전해졌다.
Both sides blamed the other for Monday's violence, which followed weeks of rising tensions over their competing territorial claims, with thousands of extra troops deployed.
양국은 수천명의 추가 병력이 투입된 가운데, 경쟁적인 영토 분쟁으로 인해 긴장이 고조되며 발생한 월요일 폭력사태에 대해 상대방을 비난했다.
An Indian army source told AFP there was no shooting but there were "violent hand-to-hand scuffles."
인도군의 한 소식통은 AFP통신에 총격은 없었지만 “폭력적인 맨손 난투극이 있었다”고 전했다.
The fighting occurred in the precipitous, rocky terrain of the strategically important Galwan Valley, which lies between China's Tibet and India's Ladakh.
이번 충돌은 중국의 티벳과 인도의 라다크 지역 사이에 위치한 전략적으로 중요한 갈완계곡의 험준한 바위투성이 지형에서 일어났다.
The United States ― which has mounting frictions with China, but sees India as an emerging ally ― said it was hoping for a "peaceful resolution," and that it was monitoring the situation closely. The U.N. called for both sides to "exercise maximum restraint."
중국과 마찰이 커지고 있는 가운데 인도를 신흥 동맹국으로 여기는 미국은 “평화적인 해결”을 희망하고 있으며, 상황을 면밀히 주시하고 있다고 밝혔다. 유엔은 양측에 “최대한 자제력을 발휘하라”고 요구했다.
India and China have never even agreed on the length of their "Line of Actual Control" frontier, and each side uses different frontier proposals made by Britain in the 19th century to back their claims.
인도와 중국은 자신들의 국경 ‘실질통제선(LAC)’의 길이에 대해 합의조차 하지 않았고, 양측은 자신들의 주장을 뒷받침하기 위해 19세기 영국이 제안한 서로 다른 국경선을 활용하고 있다.
